"Beauty of Spirit. Fulfillment of Self. Exceptional Sisterhood."
The Psi chapter was chartered at James Madison in 1944, but the national sorority was founded in 1899 in Ypsilanti, Michigan at Michigan State Normal College (known as Eastern Michigan University today). The third oldest educational sorority around, Alpha Sigma Tau was founded by eight young women: Harriet Marx, Helene Rice, Adriance Rice, Eva O'Keefe, May Gephart, Mayene Tracy, Mable Chase and Ruth Dutcher. The purpose of Alpha Sigma Tau is to promote the ethical, cultural, and social development of its members by creating an exceptional sisterhood.
