AST Q+A About Campus Employment!

On-campus jobs are a great way to not only give back to the JMU community, but also to make some nice pocket change! When you have school, friends, organizations and greek life to take up your time, can you really consider a job? Read more about what some sisters had to say about the perks of on campus job and how they manage it all during a Q+A!

1) Where do you work??


"I'm a program advisor, which essentially means that I help out on programs for HDs and RAs in their halls. I'm available as a resource for them if they need anything regarding programs and advertising." --Catie Barwood, Alpha Omicron

“I work at Madison Connection where we call alumni, parents, and friends of JMU to update records & ask for donations on behalf of the university for a variety of funds, organizations, programs, and departments.” -–Courtney Sewell, Alpha Xi

“I work as a referee for UREC and currently officiate soccer and volleyball games” -–Kiara Mauro, Alpha Xi

“I work at UREC at the Welcome Center and the Equipment Center!”—Meghan Everson, Alpha Omicron

“I work in the accessible media department so I mostly take students' textbooks (who have the accommodation) and convert them into audio files through a software so they can listen to them while they read." -–Sam Mermer, Alpha Xi

”I work in the Safety Department of UREC, UPark and the JMU satellite facilities as an emergency medical technician (EMT-B)”—Chelsea Adams, Alpha Xi

"I'm a computer lab assistant, I walk around to the labs and make sure they're running okay and then sit in Showker lab and help anyone with problems." -–Emily Smith, Alpha Omicron

2) Why did you want to work on campus?


“I love being on campus, and I enjoy the convenience!” –Leila Miran, Alpha Xi

“I wanted to work on campus so that I could become more involved here, meet more students, and make JMU a better place! I love JMU with all my heart, so it was the first and only place I looked for employment”—Chelsea Adams, Alpha Xi

"They are super flexible with my schedule so I just go in during the awkward breaks in my schedule."—Alliey Moore, Alpha Omicron

"They understand that although we are employees, we are students first and need to focus on academics. In addition I felt that Madison Connection does very important work to help support students going through financial troubles, and I wanted to be a part of helping with that”—Courtney S.

3) How do you manage school, sorority AND a job?!


“Balancing school and sorority life gets hard sometimes but you have to just keep organized and be on top of your game!—Jennifer H.

"Because of school, work, and sorority I try to do most of my big assignments like papers and projects over the weekend." -–Alliey M.

"I hold study hours and that is a way for me to work on schoolwork and spend time with my sisters. Also, geek of the week and having the positive influence of other sisters is very motivating for me!”—Kiara M.

"My biggest lifesaver is my Lily planner...I write everything out in it so I know exactly what I have to do and when it needs to be done by!" -–Sam M.

"It's all about time management! If you set aside time each day to complete schoolwork, you can go to work and then sorority activities without feeling too stressed. Most on campus jobs only require that you work 10 hours a week so you have time to do other things. Also, I drink a lot of coffee!" -–Jen Parravani, Alpha Nu.


4)What's your biggest advice for sisters looking for an on-campus job?


"It's a great way to make new friends- think about it, when else are you going to be able to work with people who are all in college and equally in love with JMU?! Its like an instant connection!"Courtney S.

Go on the website and apply, it's so easy and super convenient to work a 2 hour shift between classes—Emily S.

Don't just apply for the job just to have a job, make sure you will enjoy it somewhat so you don't feel like you are wasting your time.—Sam M.

If you really like working with people find something in the customer service area. If you aren't a huge fan of interaction with others try looking for something that doesn't really need much of the interaction. There really is something for everyone on the campus!—Meghan E.

"I got my job because my ggbig worked there told me the office was hiring, so use your connections and see who you know in an office on campus! Recruit-a-duke is also updated regularly with student jobs."--Jenny S.


"I think it's extremely important to stay on too of your school work and to be able to manage your time wisely. School is your number 1 priority and you can't let that slip your mind!"—Catie B.
