This spring, the Psi chapter has participated in a lot of
different philanthropic events for other chapters, including KA’s Rosebowl and
Sigma Chi’s Derby Days. It’s a great opportunity for AST to show support for
the other organizations, raise money for great causes, and have a lot of fun
together! We’re so lucky to be apart of such a strong Greek community at JMU!
Kayleigh Cheripka, a huge fan of KA’s Rosebowl and one of the
best volleyball players in our sorority, counts down the days until Rosebowl every
year. Kayleigh, along with Banner Gray and Laura Green, helped get our sorority
pumped up for the week and organize the events. At the end of the week, we made it to the final championship round in the volleyball tournament and came in second place behind Alpha Sigma Alpha.
Here's what Kayleigh has to tell us about the events:
What are the different activities involved in Rosebowl?
Kayleigh: The different activities in Rosebowl are penny
wars, board decorating and last but not least the volleyball tournament. There
are also multiple proceeds nights at Buffalo Wild Wings, Dona Rosa’s and
Backcountry.
Which is your favorite?
Kayleigh: My favorite has to be the volleyball tournament,
everyone gets pretty competitive and it reminds me of when I played in high
school.
What do you like most about the week?
Kayleigh: I like most about the week that everyone is
involved, and how much the coaches support each sorority. It's also for a great
cause, so there's nothing better than that.
What's a memory that stands out to you from Rosebowl this past year?
Kayleigh: Definitely winning against Alpha Phi, who is
amazing at volleyball, and coming in 2nd in the tournament.
What’s the plan for coming in first place next year?
Kayleigh: Getting as much participation as possible for the
whole week. As for the volleyball aspect of Rosebowl- protein shakes.
Every year, girls volunteer to be Derby Darlings for Sigma
Chi’s Derby Days to facilitate communication between the fraternity and our
sorority. This year, Alex Foley, Kara Camuso, Jess Garrecht, and Laura Green
(again!) were the awesome girls who represented our chapter. Thanks to them, we
had really high participation and helped raise a lot of money for the Boys and Girls
Club of Harrisonburg.

And here's what Alex has to tell us about Derby Days:
What are the different activities involved in Derby Days?
Alex: Derby Days is a week-long competition between the
sororities on campus. We participated in decorating the basement,
choreographing dances for our coaches to perform and even had an opportunity to
go down to the local Boys and Girls Club and play with the kids!
Which did you like the most/do you think our chapter liked the most?
Alex: I think one of my favorites/the chapter’s favorite was
decorating the basement. We had only 20 minutes to decorate our designated
area. We had so many creative posters and showed so much spirit that we had to
take over parts of the ceiling!
What was your favorite memory about being a derby darling this year?
Alex: My favorite memory was definitely choreographing a
dance for our coaches to do. Nothing is funnier than watching a group of
uncoordinated fraternity men trying to shake their hips to the beat of Timber.
It was so much fun!
