Ellen Derr is our latest installment of the sisterhood of the traveling letters
series. She studied abroad in Florence
for the Spring Semester of 2017, her stay was from early January until mid April. She wishes she had more time in the beautiful
city, however she has so many amazing memories from her travels. She loved weekend getaways and exploring
outside of Florence, her absolute favorite journey was to the Amalfi Coast which
boasts breathe-taking views and vibrant colors.
Some of her favorite memories of her trip include reaching the top of
Harder Klum after a two hour hike in the Swiss Alps, where she experienced gorgeous
views from the top. She also distinctly
remembers viewing the Eiffel Tower lit up and dazzling while on a dinner cruise
along the Seine River admiring the Parisian skyline. She appreciates the
connections she made while travelling round the world, she recalls their humor
and funny antics. She wishes she could
spend even more time with those people exploring Italy and continuing to make fantastic
memories together.
Her favorite class while studying abroad was a tough choice between her Culinary Arts class and her Italian culture class. She appreciates how hands on both of the courses were, loving to learn how to cook rich Italian cuisines and about the culture that surrounds the lifestyle itself. In regards to all of the amazing food she experienced abroad one meal she wishes she could eat everyday are the pancakes in Amsterdam because they were so delicious. She also misses the sweet and creamy gelato that you could pick up at any street corner, treating yourself each and every day with a taste of the Italian culture. Overall, she was inspired to study abroad by her sister who had a similar experience of visiting London while in college. When Ellen and her mother went to visit her sister she remembers thinking it was the coolest experience in the world to drop everything and live a different life for three to four months in a foreign country experiencing all of the uniqueness that each location has to offer.
