Greek Week 2013!!

It’s that time of year again…Today marks the start of James Madison University’s Greek Week! This year’s theme is The Amazing Race. Each Sorority has been paired up with a fellow JMU fraternity and given a country to represent. For Greek Week 2013, AST has been paired with Sigma Nu and is very excited to represent the country Greece!

Greek Week is all about philanthropy, and this year’s proceeds are going to the local organization The Arc of Harrisonburg and Rockingham, which is an organization that works with individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

Last year's Greek Sing!

To kick off the week’s busy schedule is the first event, Greek Sing, which will be taking place in the convo Tuesday night. Greek Sing is one our chapter’s favorite events of the year and our sisters have been working hard the entire semester to perfect our Props and Dance/Hands routines. AST’s 2013 Greek Sing theme is “The Stepford Wives.”

This year, seniors Emma Moredock and Caity McLaughlin were in charge of choreographing the Hands routine. A lot of time was put into creating, teaching and perfecting it.

“My favorite part has been getting to know the younger women in our chapter. I really feel this has been an amazing way to bond and pass on some tradition before I leave JMU! I love them all and really appreciate all the hard work and support everyone has put in.” –said Emma.

“Coming up with the routine was fun yet challenging. I can't wait to see the full routine at Greek Sing! I'm so proud of all the girls in it and can't believe that we were the ones who created it.” – said Caity.

There are 64 sisters who have learned the Hands routine and will be performing it Tuesday night. One of these sisters, Kathryn Peterson, a senior referred to as the “Hands Veteran,” is excited to participate in her last Greek Sing:

“This is my THIRD year doing hands! I'm probably the only senior in the world that would want to spend their last Greek Sing in hands but I just really love spending time with the other sisters involved. It's also just really exciting to be a part of the performance and to help make our sorority look super fab.” – said Kathryn.

In addition to Hands, there are the dancers and the props committee. Becky Epstein, a senior, is in charge of the dance and Gabby Petrie, also a senior, is in charge of creating the props. So much hard work went into creating our Greek Sing routine and we can’t wait to see how we do!

The rest of the Greek Week has many other events planned, including the Shack A Thon, Greek Games, Madipalooza, Relay for Life and a Greek God and Goddess pageant.

T-shirt Design!
A lot of hard work went into planning Greek Week. In fact, three of our very own sisters helped plan the entire thing: Abby Shimkus (Greek Week Coordinator), Esha Hore and Cate Jensen.

“Organizing the event was a lot of hard work as well as a lot of fun. We got to really tweak the events to the liking of the Greek community because we know it from the inside. I am excited to see the whole week really come together and to see that everyone has a good time!” –Esha Horé, Junior

“Being a part of the Greek Week Committee has been a great experience. I designed the t-shirt for Greek Week and seeing other people from not only my own organizations but also other organizations involved is awesome. Greek Week brings all the different fraternities and sororities together for a common purpose and that's what it's all about. I'm most excited for Greek Sing! That’s always been my favorite.” –Cate Jensen, senior

AST is very excited to get involved and give back the Harrisonburg community this week! Thank you too everyone who has put in their time and hard work to make this week happen.
